Squarespace for churches: an honest review — and the question of who updates it
Credit first: Squarespace churches keep their sites current. Of the 198 Squarespace church sites in our 2026 study of 2,000 small-church websites, 91.4% showed an update within the year — the best freshness of any DIY builder cohort with more than 100 sites in our sample.
So this page isn’t going to tell you Squarespace makes bad websites — it doesn’t. The question a church has to answer before choosing it is smaller and harder: who, by name, updates it every week? If you have that person, Squarespace is a fine home. If you don’t, the site drifts — beautifully designed and quietly out of date.
From our 2,000-church study
What we found in the wild
Of the 198 Squarespace church sites in our 2026 study:
- showed an update within the last year
- 91.4%
- had a working online giving path
- 77.3%
- made service times findable
- 92.4%
For context, across all 1,930 reachable sites in the study: 74% showed an update within the year and 67.3% had working giving. This is correlation, not causation — a platform doesn’t make a church diligent, but diligent churches cluster on certain platforms. As we wrote in the study itself: Squarespace’s freshness lead likely reflects who chooses it as much as what it does. See the full study →
What Squarespace does well — for real
The templates really are that good
Squarespace’s design system is the strongest of the mainstream builders. A careful volunteer can produce a site that looks professionally designed, because in a real sense it was.
Their churches keep sites fresh
91.4% of the Squarespace church sites in our study showed an update within the year, and 92.4% made service times findable. Whoever chooses Squarespace tends to tend it — that’s a real, measured pattern.
Transparent, published pricing
Every plan is on the pricing page: Basic $16, Core $23, Plus $39, Advanced $99 per month on annual billing (checked 2026-07-16). No sales call to learn the number — we respect that.
Where churches struggle with Squarespace
The weekly-update question
Squarespace rewards the church that has a designer-hearted volunteer and punishes the one that doesn’t — not with breakage, but with drift. The study’s strong freshness numbers describe churches that had that person. The plan has to survive that person leaving.
Church features are assembly required
Sermon archives, podcast feeds, giving, event registration — all possible, all assembled from blocks and third-party embeds by whoever runs the site. It works; it’s just nobody’s product. Church-specific platforms ship those as features.
Giving lags the church platforms
77.3% of Squarespace church sites in our study had a working giving path — solid for DIY, but behind every church-specific platform we measured, because giving on Squarespace is an embed someone has to set up and maintain.

Who should stay on Squarespace
Plenty of churches should pick (or keep) Squarespace. Stay if:
- You have a named person who enjoys the tool and updates it weekly — the study says Squarespace churches like yours mostly thrive.
- Design control matters to your team and they want to own it themselves.
- The published $16–$23/month price is the whole budget, and your volunteer’s time isn’t part of the math.

Common questions
- Is Squarespace good for church websites?
- Genuinely, yes — if someone runs it. In our 2026 study, 91.4% of the 198 Squarespace church sites showed an update within the year, the best freshness of any DIY builder cohort over 100 sites in our sample. The templates are excellent. The open question is never the software; it’s the person.
- What does Squarespace cost for a church?
- As of 2026-07-16: Basic $16/month, Core $23/month, Plus $39/month, and Advanced $99/month on annual billing — month-to-month runs $25 to $139. Most church sites fit Basic or Core. Confirm current prices at squarespace.com, because they move.
- Your study says Squarespace churches do fine — so why switch?
- Fair question, and some shouldn’t switch. The study numbers describe churches that have a person who tends the site. If that’s you, stay. The churches that come to us are the ones where that person left, got busy, or never existed — and the site has been coasting on a good design ever since. One honest caveat from our own study writeup: this is correlation, not causation — the platform doesn’t make a church diligent, but diligent churches cluster on certain platforms.
- Why is giving weaker on Squarespace than on church platforms?
- Because on Squarespace, giving is an embed someone sets up, not a feature that ships with the product. 77.3% of Squarespace church sites in our study had working giving — respectable for DIY, behind every church-specific platform we measured. We connect whichever giving platform your church already uses, as part of the build.
- What would moving to Church Digital look like?
- We design and build a custom site around your content, host it, and handle routine updates — $120/month flat, $0 setup, no contract, cancel anytime from your account. We don’t port the Squarespace template; we build fresh. Grade your current site first with our free grader if you want an honest baseline.
